World Education Australia appoints new chief executive

September 8, 2016

5th September, 2016: Sydney-based charity Good Return has appointed Shane Nichols as chief executive, following the retirement of founder Guy Winship, due to ill-health.

Good Return is a not-for-profit group working to eradicate poverty by facilitating education programs and microfinancing for small, often home-run, family businesses in the Asia Pacific region. It is backed by Accenture, Clayton Utz, Westpac, Origin Energy and Deloitte.

“I would like to thank Guy for his extraordinary contribution and his unwavering and deep commitment to alleviating poverty,” said Kate Jordan, Chair of Good Return, who is also Deputy Chief Executive Partner at Clayton Utz.

The program has funded 9,000 loans, trained over 40,000 families across Asia Pacific and impacted over 600,000 people with its program work.

“Guy’s legacy is remarkable and we owe it to him to build on it,” said Gordon Cairns, Board Member at Good Return, who is also Chairman of both Origin Energy and Woolworths.

“Guy has been an extraordinary leader and is a man who we love and admire. Shane’s appointment is a great reflection of Guy’s development of a talented team.”

Nichols joined Good Return shortly after the initiative was launched in 2003 and has acted as Good Return’s Programs Director until his appointment as CEO effective 1 September.

“I am fortunate to have the opportunity to take forward the amazing work that Guy has initiated,” said Nichols. “Through the lottery of birth, millions in our region are living in poverty. We are committed to ending the cycle of poverty and disadvantage, and our team has the ambition, talent and perseverance to help bring this about.”

Reflecting on his life’s work, Winship expressed appreciation for the support of Nichols, the Board and the team in building Good Return, and the thousands of Australians who support their poorest neighbours: “Making a difference in someone else’s life makes a difference in your own, that’s the good return,” said Winship.###
