Thank you for your support towards Nepal

To our generous donors...we say THANK YOU for your support!

With your assistance, this EOFY campaign, Good Return raised $60,000.

Your donation will support Nepali families in crisis to build pathways out of poverty.

The devastating situation in Nepal.

The communities where Good Return partners operate in the Mount Everest region of Nepal have been devastated by the effects of the covid crisis. Cases of covid have now outgrown India per capita, yet Nepal has fewer than 2000 ICU beds for a population of 30 million. The UN estimates that the covid pandemic will push an additional 47 million women and girls into extreme poverty.

We have received reports of people who have been without income for a year - due to the loss of trekking tourism, turning to money lenders to borrow money to purchase food. They are paying up to 60% interest and in some cases are obliged to provide free labour, a portion of their harvest, or other benefits to the money lenders. They are at risk of becoming stuck in a debt trap that prevents them from investing in their livelihoods.

How your donation will help.

In response to the urgent situation in Nepal, Good Return’s EOFY campaign 2021 raised money for our partners in Nepal to support Nepali communities build new livelihoods and pathways out of poverty through both access to finance and financial skills for the future.

Our programs work to break the cycle of poverty and build new sustainable livelihoods through financial management and business training. Our Consumer Awareness and Financial Empowerment (CAFE) program improves the well-being of participants by boosting their personal financial capability, money management and self confidence.

Sita’s story.

For 20 years, Sita and her family worked as tourist porters in the Mount Everest region. Her livelihood was taken away due to the impact COVID-19 has had on tourism. Good Return provided Sita with a micro-loan and financial training to help her establish a small business raising goats and a new livelihood and pathway out of poverty for her family.

“We took a loan and then started a goat raising business. Other friends from the savings group frequently come to help us monitor the goats and provide feedback for us to care for the goats properly. It is going very well."

With your donation, more women like Sita in Nepal will have access to finance and financial skills for the future.

Mimu Raghubanshi, Good Return’s Nepal Country Coordinator, reflects on the impact that your donations will have on Good Return’s Programs and partners in Nepal:

“The economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic has been devastating. The tourism sector is the hardest hit. Mounting joblessness has put the [informal] workers' livelihood at risk of falling into extreme poverty. According to a study of the Central bank of Nepal – ¼ of the labor market are unemployed due to pandemic and lockdown.

Your generous support [to the cause] is again a silver lining towards improving financial stability and the resilience of the disadvantaged and marginalised communities living in the remote mountainous region of Nepal. Through access to finance, and by enabling these communities to develop new financial & entrepreneurial skills, increase productivity, capital and most importantly rebuild their self-confidence to avail livelihood opportunities, your support will ultimately assist in lifting them out of debt traps and reducing the families in poverty.

Good Return, through its initiative, has been successful in building the financial capacity of trainers, reaching over 4000 vulnerable households through women learners, to develop their financial management skill, financial literacy and skills to improve their livelihoods.”
